I am forty (as of 11-22-06), married and have three children. Both my wife and myself are attorneys with very demanding schedules. About three years ago, I had enough of sitting behind my desk and decided to get back on my bike after a 11 year absence. I had been getting more and more stressed out, more and more lethargic and tired and was getting fatter and fatter. Enough was enough.
My first year back on the bike was a lot of unstructured riding. A lot had changed in the decade I had been away from cycling, but I was enjoying myself. I felt better, lost a lot of weight and got pretty strong. I was also a little frustrated in that I had hit a plateau in a no man's land between just a casual enthusiast and a serious cyclist. I was tired of getting dropped by the "fast group".
I contacted Dave and started a structured training program in January of '05. The first year was remarkable in the strides I had made. I lost weight, got strong and faster and became on of the fast riders. I participated in numerous events including the Triple Bypass in Colorado (120 miles and 10,000' of climbing). I became on of the fast riders.
In the spring of '06 and took the next step and started racing. Again, my results were fantastic. I became a competitive Cat 5 racer and won a 48 mile race in August on a solo breakaway. My team voted me the best newcomer and was urged to upgrade to Cat 4 as soon as possible. During this time people continually asked me what I was doing (or taking) in order to get the profound improvements in my abilities. The answer, I've got a coach.
