David Grigsby is an expert level cycling coach. Coach Dave is certified by USA Cycling and personally trained and certified in the use of power by Dr. Andy Coggan and Hunter Allen, authors of the book Racing and Training with a Power Meter.
A life-long rider, racer, and bike shop owner, Coach Dave began his cycling odyssey in his grandfather’s bike shop at the age of 4. After time away from the bike while attending college at Eastern Kentucky University, Dave spent his summers as a lifeguard for the state of Kentucky and has over 70 documented rescues. He also spent a summer playing drums in a hard rock band on the road in the southeastern United States as the opening act for Molly Hatchet. After graduating college with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration he rediscovered cycling when his son turned 5 and he purchased bicycles for them to ride together. This wonderful bonding, riding with his son, soon renewed his passion for the bike and within 6 months he left his job with an insurance company in order to pursue his dream of opening a bike shop and riding, training, racing, and selling bikes for a living. Over the past 15 years Dave has won multiple state titles at the Bluegrass State Games in road racing, State Championship and United States Regional number plates in BMX racing and most recently wins and podiums in 3 ultra endurance mountain bike competitions.
In 1999, Dave was named Director of Team Minoura, a National level BMX race team that traveled the country racing on the NBL circuit. In 2006, Dave was named to the Executive Leadership Committee of the Kentucky Mountain Bike Association, on which he still serves. Dave is also the Race Director for the Tour De London Road race (which is now the Kentucky State Championships) and owns and operates The Bike Shop in his hometown of London, Kentucky.
But titles and awards do NOT automatically make one a good coach. Listening to your athletes and understanding the impact of their workouts are crucial to helping an athlete become the best they can be. Helping athletes balance training with family obligations, work, and the demands of daily life are just as important to building a complete athlete as are sprint intervals and climbing exercises. Coach Dave doesn’t prescribe a workout that he hasn’t done himself, and he has done them all.
"I actually became a coach at the request of other riders who were coming to me for advice, training plans, and race strategy. I would often beat many riders in a race that I couldn’t even keep up with on a hard training ride. I always performed well above my head when the gun went off because I rode smart and had a great, natural feel for the pack and the tactics of racing. I made it to the podium in a lot of races simply by riding smarter than other much stronger riders.
I remember my first bike race. It was a 4 - 5 race with a packed field of 50 riders on a narrow circuit of about 1 1/2 miles. I instinctively did a lot of things right but only later discovered this. I stayed in the top 15 riders at all times. I didn’t panic when a prime was called out and riders tore for the line. And I kept my work to a minimum until it really counted. When a rider broke from the field with a half lap to go, I sent a friend of mine (as if he were a domestique) after him to pull me back, and when we made the catch I sat on the leaders wheel till the 100 meter mark then ripped his legs off in the sprint, winning by a bike length. To some watching the race it was very impressive for a first timer. But to me it was all played out in my head well before the race ended and seemed only logical. It was at this moment, in my first race that I realized I had a real tactical sense for the sport of bike racing. Soon I was making my way up the through the categories and becoming a strong racer both on the road and on the BMX bike with my son. I also loved training and racing on the mountain bike and soon found myself spending many winter days out training on the hilly frozen trails of Eastern Kentucky.
My coaching claim to fame, and the 'sales pitch' I give to new athletes inquiring about my coaching services is this: I have never had an athlete sign up for a 3-month or longer program that did not renew his or her coaching after the initial period, not once. I am very proud of this little stat and with all my clients over the past 10 years; I believe it is an attention to detail that makes me a good coach. The average length of membership of my current client list is well over 1 year. Some have been with me for 3 or more years including professional cyclists who race for a living. Let me show you what we can do together."
Lance Dobbs is a certified USA Cycling coach, and personally trained with David Grigsby for the past 2 seasons. Lance will attain his Expert Level certification in Fall 2007.
Growing up in the mountains of South Central Pennsylvania as a child, Lance was an avid cyclist. Not only did it serve as a means of transportation from town to town to visit friends, it was another means of entertainment aside from the typical outdoor activities. It’s quite possible Lance accidentally invented “mountain biking”, as he and his brother created paths and jumps in the mountains to occupy their time back in the early 1970’s. Lance was known as a fearless cyclist, mimicking his idol of the time, Evil Knievel, while catching big air among the trees and rocks.
As an adult he turned his attention away from cycling to concentrate on his career. In 1986, he acquired his degree in Mechanical Engineering, and relocated to Atlanta, GA. Working long, hard, arduous hours….the only physical activity Lance participated in was golfing. Golf is a very demanding sport….physically it’s technical, while requiring great mental discipline. And it was here that Lance developed, refined, and applied his successful formula for achieving improvement in sport.
In his early 40’s, Lance once again began cycling seriously, and in the process discovered a “return to innocence”. Knowing his fastest route toward improvement would be with the assistance of a professional coach, he contacted David Grigsby. With David’s guidance, Lance achieved truly amazing results over the two years they worked together, and at his coaches urging, Lance decided to attain his coaching license. Lance is now not only an accomplished road racer and cycling coach; he is turning his attention to the sport of triathlon.
“After working with Lance for a couple of years and being quite simply amazed at his attention to detail, his thirst for improvement and the mechanics behind it, I knew this guy would make one incredible coach, and so I pushed him to pursue this path along with his racing. I’m glad I did. Now that Lance is a coach, I can't imagine anyone more talented to bring aboard E.B.C.” – Dave Grigsby.
“Over the years, I was never a natural athlete…..what I achieved I worked diligently and very hard for.” And it is this that makes him such an effective coach today…as he can easily relate to the common person’s needs and skills level. He knows that the only path to long term, consistent improvement is a rational and analytical approach, hard work, and persistence. Today, Lance spends his time coaching others, while expanding his coaching knowledge through USA Cycling’s Education Program. His biggest thrill is seeing dreams come true for others…no matter how large or small. And it is this that is the essence to his coaching!
